The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, urged women around the world to unite in the fight for equity, rejecting any form of discrimination, including classism and machismo. During the inauguration of the World Conference of Parliamentary Women at the National Palace in Mexico City, Sheinbaum called on the present women to embark on a path toward peacebuilding through justice for women.
"As parliamentary women and as women participating in public life, I urge you to make this cry for equality for parity a general shout against classicism, against racism, against machismo, and any form of discrimination in the world," expressed Sheinbaum in front of 350 women from 62 countries who participated in the event.
During her speech, Sheinbaum highlighted Mexico's example in gender parity in both federal and state congresses. She also mentioned that starting in September, there will be parity in the Mexican Judiciary with the appointment of nine new ministers, of whom five will be women.
In line with her previous proposals, Sheinbaum reiterated the suggestion she made at the G20 Summit to allocate a percentage of the global military budget towards the pacification of countries and to ensure the education of girls worldwide.
The president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Tulia Ackson, also called for combating violence against women and for understanding that parity is not just about numbers, but about the perspective and ability to design inclusive policies for all, regardless of gender, race, or other aspects.
The event featured both in-person and virtual participation from prominent female figures such as Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Nahla Haidar, president of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women; Citlalli Hernández, Secretary of Women of Mexico; Martha Lucía Micher, president of the Equality Commission of the Mexican Senate; and Luisa María Alcalde, president of the Mexican party Morena.
The first World Conference of Parliamentary Women, which concluded this Saturday, aimed to discuss and promote issues related to parity in parliaments around the world, as well as legislative initiatives that promote gender equality and the active participation of men and women in the fight for parity.
